Research and Innovation

Dr McMonagle established a bone anchored hearing aid (2008) and cochlear implant program (2010) on the Gold Coast.

He introduced image guidance surgery for endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery to the Gold Coast in 2007. He was a founding member of the Gold Coast Hospital Head and Neck Cancer Clinic.

Dr McMonagle has strong science and research interests. He has completed a PhD thesis on Olfactory Ensheathing Cells and Stem Cells in Nerve Repair and Regeneration through Griffith University under Prof Alan Mackay-Sim (Australian of the Year 2017).

This work has involved developing alternative methods of peripheral nerve repair using unique nerve cells from the nose.

This same technology has led to applications in neurological disease, stem cell regeneration therapies, and the world first olfactory ensheathing cells for human spinal cord injury trial at Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2002.
